Zhu Xiaodan, General Director of Guangzhou Municipal CPC Committee and Wang Xiaoling, Director of the Publicity Department of Guangzhou recently met with representatives from the National Forestry Bureau as well as central media units which are coming to Guangzhou with an outreach campaign to build a National Forest City and to establish a program of New Guangzhou for sound biological conditions around the city. According to Zhu, Guangzhou remains committed to planting more trees and increasing the number of green projects in proportion to the GDP.

In 2003, Guangzhou kicked off a project to return mountains, land, water and sky to their original state. In Phase I, a total area of 131 square kilometers of green land was built. In Phase II, an additional 20 plus billion yuan will be put into the building of a green system focusing on encircling forests, offshore defense forests, new village green lands as well as flowers and trees to sustainable development. Another 136 square kilometers of green land will be established as well. 

As Chen Guo, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, stated at the meeting, Guangzhou will facilitate the building of community gardens, village gardens, small gardens and green squares in the busy downtown area. The aim is to make a green area visible and situated no more than 500 meters away from our citizens' doors.
