Brief Introduction
Founded in 1953, the College of Chinese Language and Culture of Jinan University (website:www.jnu.edu.cn) is a college devoted to the overseas Chinese language and culture education. She is the Chinese Education Base of the Overseas Chinese Office of the State Council. She is also one of the key universities that help the Chinese language teaching in neighboring countries under the guidance of the National Chinese Language Office. She is one of HSK(Chinese Proficiency Test) centers, and is also a largest training and testing center for the National Teacher's Certificate for Teaching Chinese as a second language in south China. She is also an examination venue of National Entrance Examination of Chinese Universities for overseas students and also the main examination venue of the Joint Entrance Examination of Jinan University and Huaqiao University.
The College offers courses in a multi-disciplinary, multi-level and various forms. Now there are altogether more than 1800 students at different levels, in which 78 are graduate students, 210 undergraduates, 1104 pre-university students, and more than 500 long-term or short-term Chinese-learning international students.
Specialization and Programs
I¡¢Full-time Chinese Language Undergraduate Programs (including three specializations: Chinese Language and Culture, Commercial Chinese and Chinese-English Bilingual Program)
Credit system: Standard length of study is 4 years, which can be postponed according to the selection of the courses by students.
Aim of Training: This major is to foster talents that have an overall understanding of Chinese Language, a general understanding of China, and who can be engaged in Chinese language application and Chinese information processing, and who can have some research abilities. Students in the specialization of commercial Chinese are to acquire basic China-related commerce and trade knowledge and skills. Students in the specialization of Chinese-English Bilingual Program are to become talents with proficiency in both the two languages.
Main courses: Oral Chinese, Chinese Listening Comprehension, Chinese Intensive Reading, Chinese Extensive Reading, Modern Chinese Grammar, Commercial Chinese, Tourism Chinese, Fundamental Writing, A Survey to Linguistics, A Survey of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Chinese Ancient Literature, Selected Readings from Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese Culture, Compared Studies on Chinese and Foreign Cultures, Chinese Folk Customs, Chinese Communication, Selected Readings from Ancient Chinese Poetry, Computer Application. For Commercial Chinese specialization, there are also some specialized Chinese courses including Commercial Oral Chinese, Writing, Reading, etc., An Introduction to Chinese Commerce and Trade, and Commerce and Trade Business. For Chinese-English Bilingual Program, there are also courses including English Listening Comprehension, Oral English, Intensive Reading, Writing, Reading and Translation, etc.
II. Rudimentary, Intermediate and Advanced Chinese Language Class
Aim of Training:
Rudimentary Class (I, II): Students are expected to grasp basic phones and tones, grasp 3051 words and 1604 Chinese characters, having basic listening, speaking, reading and writing ability, which may enable them for basic living, study and social intercourse. This level is equivalent to HSK Rudimentary B Level or above.
Intermediate Class (I, II): Students are expected to grasp 5253 words and 2205 Chinese characters, having quite good listening, speaking, reading and writing ability, which may enable them for pursuing higher studies in China's institutes of higher learning. This level is equivalent to HSK Intermediate C Level or above.
Advanced Class (I, II): Students are expected to grasp more than 7000 words through the study. They are expected to comprehend Chinese TV programs and Chinese newspapers and be able to pursue higher studies and conduct general affairs in China-related tourism, trade and commerce. This level is equivalent to HSK Intermediate A Level or above.
Length of Study: One year for each level. Each level is divided into two parts. Students may apply for either part according to his/her own Chinese ability. Transfer students are accepted.

III¡¢Crash Chinese Course (Fundamental Class, Advanced Class )
Aims: Students in Fundamental Class are to acquire the basic skills of Chinese listening, speaking and reading within a short period of time through intensive training. Students in Advanced Class are to acquire better skills of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and the basic skill of Chinese writing. This level is equivalent to HSK Rudimentary A Level or above.
Length of Study: 1 semester for Fundamental Class
1 semester for Advanced Class
Main courses: Chinese Intensive Reading, Chinese Extensive Reading, Chinese Listening and Speaking, Chinese Writing and Chinese Character Learning, etc.
Requirement for Completion of Studies: After finishing the studies requested and passing the tests, students will be conferred the Completion of Studies Certificate by Jinan University
IV¡¢Business Chinese
Aim: Students are required to get a basic understanding of Chinese business and trade, grasp common commercial language and related social cultures, being able to write basic commercial documents and deal with commercial affairs.
Length of study: 1 semester
Main Courses: Business Chinese Intensive Reading, Business Spoken Chinese, Business Chinese Writing , China Survey, etc.
Requirement for Completion of Studies: After finishing the studies requested and passing the tests, students will be conferred the Completion of Studies Certificate by Jinan University
V¡¢Cantonese
Aim: Students are trained to be able to communicate in Cantonese through one semester's training.
Length of Study: 1 semester
Main Courses: Cantonese Pronunciation, Cantonese Intensive Reading, Spoken Cantonese and Cantonese Listening Comprehension, etc.
Requirement for Completion of Studies: After finishing the studies requested and passing the tests, students will be conferred the Completion of Studies Certificate by Jinan University
VI¡¢Chinese Teacher Training Course
Aim: To improve the Chinese teaching ability of the students.
Length of study: 4-6 weeks
Main Courses: Chinese Teaching Methodology, Practical Language Teaching, Modern Chinese Phonetics, Modern Chinese Teaching Methodology, Teaching Materials and Syllabus Preparation, Chinese Culture, contrast between Chinese and Foreign Languages (courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement. Package course is also available, which includes board and lodging and travel.)
VII¡¢Part-time Chinese Language Class
Aim of Training: Students are expected to improve their Chinese proficiency for their job and gain a basic understanding of China as well as Chinese language and culture.
Length of Study: 4-6 weeks' weekend and evening classes. There are altogether 16 classes in one training section and one class has two hours.
Main Courses: Chinese Intensive Reading, Chinese Listening and Speaking, Fundamental Chinese, Basic Chinese Dialogue, Chinese Reading, Chinese Character, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting. (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's condition or requirement.)
¢ø¡¢Summer/Winter Vacation Chinese Courses
Aim: Chinese Training programs at different levels are provided according to the actual language ability of students for them to gain a basic understanding of China as well as Chinese language and culture.
Length of study: 4- weeks during winter or summer vacation.
Main Courses: Chinese Intensive Reading, Chinese Listening and Speaking, Chinese Characters (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement. Package course is also available, which can include board and lodging and travel.)
¢ù¡¢HSK Training Course
Aim: Students are to be familiarized with requirement and test skills for rudimentary, intermediate HSK test and improve their Chinese language ability through intensive Chinese practice.
Length of study: 4 to 6 weeks. Available at April, June and November each year.
Main Courses: HSK Test-related skills and training courses. (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement.)
¢ú¡¢"Chinese Language and Culture" Summer and Winter Camp
Aim of training: Students are to learn basic knowledge of Chinese language and culture, improve their Chinese dialogue ability and understand the latest development of Chinese society.
Length of study: 2 to 3 weeks, held in summer and winter breaks.
Main Courses: Mandarin Communications, Calligraphy, Music, Fine Arts, Martial Arts, etc. (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement. Package course is also available, which can include board and lodging and travel.)
XI¡¢Correspondent Undergraduate Programs and Professional Training Programs for Overseas Chinese Language Teachers.
Aim of training: To train overseas Chinese language teachers. Helping overseas Chinese language teachers improve Chinese language application and grasp teaching theory and technique.
Length of study: Five years for undergraduate programs, altogether 26 courses. Three years for professional training program, altogether 15 courses. The graduate of Profession Training Class can be transferred to the fourth year of Correspondent Undergraduate class for further study.
