Called on by the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, over six thousand volunteers acted as temporary conductors and provided voluntary 24-hour services for stranded passengers in relation to booking information, traffic dispersion and logistics support.
Heavy snows and rains prevented lots of passengers from returning home, which has caused great pressure for the railway stations in Guangzhou. Since those volunteers, most of whom are college students and youngsters, had not prepared themselves well for the cold weather, quite a few of them got sick due to the thin clothes as well as busy work.
Chen Shengjian, a student of Guangzhou City Polytechnic, was one of them. Although shivering with cold, he still refused to take a rest, saying he wouldn¡¯t be defeated by coldness and illness.
All the other volunteers shared the same confidence as Chen Shengjian, believing that all difficulties would be overcome. .
