At the Fifth Summit of the Chinese Air Cargo Industry 2008 recently in Guangzhou, the person in charge of Baiyun Airport announced that "Baiyun Airport aims to be the largest logistics center in Southern China and even in Greater China." In 2010, Baiyun Airport plans to open 30 new cargo routes. In the following two years, Baiyun Airport will rank among the top 15 of its kind in the world since its cargo and mail volume will reach two million tons, with over 50% of the total being international cargo and mail.
In addition to its cross-border truck express routes to Hong Kong Airport and a cargo station in Dongguan City, Baiyun Airport will also build an airplane maintenance base to meet the requirements of the development of the cargo center.
Baiyun Airport has implemented over 30 services to improve the efficiency of customs clearance and to expedite the development of its cargo business. The export cargo from Zhujiang Delta via Hong Kong to other countries formerly had to be declared one day in advance, but now can be declared on the very day it is to clear Baiyun Airport.
Additionally, more and more shipping agencies have been attracted to declare the cargo through Baiyun Airport due to the low transport costs there. As of now, Baiyun Airport has signed the agreement for strategic cooperation with world-renowned shipping agencies such as Federal Express, Schenker, COSCO, and SINOTRANS.
The person in charge of Guangzhou Gleam International Forwarding & Agency Company said that "after signing the agreement with Baiyun Airport, we could save 500 Yuan for every ton of cargo and save nearly five million Yuan in total every year, taking into account our cargo volume of 10 thousand tons a year."
