Meizhou , which as long famed as hometown of culture , overseas-chinese , football and hometown of folk song , and cultural city . It lies in east-north of the Guangdong province , a place where three provinces meets . To its east , it is Chaozhou and Shantou ; To its north , there is Longyan of Fujian province and Ganzhou of Jiangxi province ; To its south , there is Heyuan city . Meizhou has jurisdiction over six counties : Meixian , Jiaoling , Wuhua , Dapu , Pingyuan and Fengshun , one municipality : Xingning and one city proper : Meijiang district . Meizhou is the main gathering and distributing center of the Hakkas . The meeting of the world's Hakkas and the contact friendship meeting of the world's Hakkas have been held here , and, Meizhou is famed the Hakkas settlement of the world . It has a strong , distinctive characteristic local conditions and customs of Hakkas .

The Hakkas , is a special subdivion of the Han nationality of the Chinese nation . For over two thousand years , the Hans of Central Plain , for the causes of escaping the war , hunger , persecute or the allocation of the government , continuously moved to the south and settled in Jiangxi , Guangdong and Fujian provinces . And then , they distributed to Sichuan , Guangxi , Hainan , Taiwan , HK and southeast of Asia . They are guests compared to the local citizens , as a result , they are called Hakkas According to the historical material now have in hand , ancient Hans of Central Plain have six times of largescale movement towards south . The first time ,Qingshihuang sent 500000 troops to station in the south of Five Ridges . The second time is in the last years of Eastern Han dynasty , the yellow Turbans Uprising and the Three kingdoms , the two Jins period ; The third time is during the period between the mid-Tang dynasty and the Five dynasty ; The fourth time is in the song dynasty ; the Jin troops march southward and the Hans surmount south ; The fifth time is during the period when Qing troops go down south , the Hans migrate because they fail to risist the troops of the Qing dynasty ; The sixth time is in the period of Yongzheng of Qing dynasty , many Hakkas migrated to Guangxi , Sichuan because of the movement of "move Hu Guang , fill Sichuan" . During the latest two centuries , the number of Hakkas who migrated to overseas increase gradually .

During the migrative history of the Hakkas , the Meizhou is main gathering and distributing center . In Yuan dynasty , the Shes , who is local citizens of Meizhou , flee to some other places because the failure of resisting the troops of Yuan dynasty . As a result of that , there was no "She" leader in Meizhou in Ming dynasty . The meizhou municipality is occupied mostly by Hakkas and became the main settle ment of Hakkas (now there is only a few "Shes" live in Dapu county of Meizhou).

Considering the gathering and distributing center and main settlement , Meizhou is the representative region of Hakkas culture , and it is famed as the Hakkas settlement of the world .
