
The Ma Sicong Statue locates in Luhu Park
Unable to take the persecution and insults of the "Cultural Revolution", Ma Sicong, a famous composer and violinist, fled to Philadelphia, US and died of illness in May, 1987.
Twenty years later, his ashes found their way to his hometown. The ashes of Ma Sicong and his wife arrived in Guangzhou accompanied by six of his relatives on the night of Nov.11th and will be buried at Baiyun Mountain on 14th. The Ma Sicong Statue located on the west bank of Luhu Park will be unveiled on that same day. That day has also been named Ma Sicong Day by Guangzhou Gold Bell Prize. On that day, a series of other activities will be held in his memory, including a launching ceremony of Ma Sicong's Complete Music Box and concert for Ma Sicong's Works.
The Ma Sicong Music Art Museum located in the Guangzhou Museum of Art was opened in May, 2002. It was the first museum in memory of an individual music artist. The museum is home to two of his violins and over 1400 pages of manuscripts as well as other legacies such as a piano.
Ma went to France for music learning in 1923 and served as the first president of the Central Conservatory of Music. He was prosecuted during the Cultural Revolution. In January, 1971, he fled to Hong Kong with his family and later settled in Philadelphia, USA. In 1984, he was politically rehabilitated and his music began to be played within China. He died of illness in 1984 at age 76 and his ashes were buried in Washington Cemetery.
